Transformer relocation from Manitoba, Canada to Honolulu, Hawaii

AFF Logistics’ turnkey service addresses all aspects of moving any type of challenging, oversize or project cargo.

In December 2010, AFF Logistics was asked to move a 157,000-pound power transformer and two 48-foot flatbed loads of radiators, bushings and miscellaneous transformer parts from the manufacturing facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to a transformer pad inside the ground level floor of a substation building in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The transformer was loaded onto a 13-axle trailer and hauled to the Port of San Diego. It was then transloaded onto a leased specialized heavy haul trailer to eliminate any additional transferring until delivery at its final destination. The trailer and transformer were rolled onto a roll-on/roll-off ocean vessel and transported to the Port of Honolulu.

Upon arrival in Honolulu, all required permits, specialized routing, pilot cars and police escorts were in place, allowing for a smooth delivery to the substation. At the substation, the transformer was crane-transferred onto a custom-built hydraulic platform and then taken into the building, where it was lowered onto rollers and placed into its designated substation vault.
